  • How do I make an appointment?
Find an appointment through your WLC student portal here. We also have some drop-in availability on Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Fridays. All in-person consultations take place in our studios on the fourth floor of Weinstein Hall.
  • What information do I need to make an appointment?

Please be prepared with the name of your course and instructor, your assignment, and what you want to work on during your session.

  • Can I practice for interviews with a speech consultant??

Absolutely! You are welcome to meet with a speech consultant to discuss any type of public expression.

Speech appointments, beyond class assignment preparation and practice, can include advance planning for:

    • career interviews
    • conference presentations
    • broadcast appearances
    • senior thesis or capstone defenses
    • group presentations
    • reports of findings by faculty and student researchers
  • Can I come for an additional practice appointment?

Yes! You can make as many additional appointments as you would like. Ask your consultants if they think you require an additional appointment.

  • Where is my appointment?

Appointments are held on the fourth floor of Weinstein Hall in our studios, which are located between the Department of Journalism and the Department of Rhetoric and Communication Studies. Your consultant(s) will be there a few minutes before your appointment to greet you.

  • When should I make my appointment?

The key to successful preparation is allowing enough time for the kind of contemplation and practice you may decide you need.

Students can book appointments 24 hours to 30 days in advance. We recommend booking an appointment date that is at least a week prior to your presentation or event. We are especially busy during midterms and finals, so it’s best to make an appointment as soon as you know your availability.

  • How do I cancel an appointment?
You may cancel an appointment by following the cancellation link in your confirmation email, or by logging in directly to your WLC student portal here, selecting the "My Appointments" tab, and canceling the appointment.
  • How long will my appointment last?

Appointments are scheduled for the full hour, but they may only last 45-50 minutes depending on the client’s needs and level of preparation.

  • Does my instructor know if I make an appointment?
You may opt to send an attendance notice to your instructor. This option is selected while booking your appointment. If you have a consultant assigned to your course, your instructor will receive a weekly summary of the course section’s attendance.
  • What if my speech isn’t ready yet?

That’s okay — show up with what you have. If you want to brainstorm ideas for your speech rather than practice delivery, specify this when you make your appointment or let your consultant know at the start of your appointment.

  • Why do I have two speech consultants?

When you make your appointment, you may select an appointment time with either one or two consultants. Working with two consultants ensures that you get multiple perspectives and the highest quality of feedback.

  • Will my practice be recorded?

Recording is typically a part of a practice session. This allows your consultants to evaluate your delivery and speaking style and gives you an opportunity to become more comfortable with public speaking.
