What common questions and concerns do students have when seeking English Language and Intercultural Learning (EL&IL) support?
Students’ questions typically fall into three categories: language, academic, and cultural.
In terms of English language support, multilingual students often seek assistance with writing structure and organization. They may also be interested in developing cross-cultural communication skills, such as engaging in small talk and understanding common idiomatic expressions.
Regarding academic concerns, students frequently request strategies to enhance their classroom engagement and participation.
Culturally, students often seek a deeper understanding of U.S. culture, values, and traditions. They also want guidance on the cultural adjustment process and effective intercultural communication strategies.

Who seeks EL&IL support?
Most of our student clients are international, multi-lingual, and multi-cultural students. However, U.S. students also find the intercultural topics important, especially if they have intercultural and study abroad interests. Check out the seminars about cross-cultural communication and cultural adjustment! Everyone is welcome!

Who are the EL&IL consultants?
The consultants are international and U.S. students who have experience and training in English learning and intercultural living. They are language learners themselves. They see the transformative impact that living and learning in another country can have on students. While they recognize the challenges that come with living abroad, they also believe that, with the right support, international experiences can become some of the most enriching and significant moments in a student’s life.

What are opportunities for students to strengthen English language and intercultural knowledge?
- Speak with a consultant. Students are welcome to drop in and speak with our student consultants, who have intercultural and language experience themselves. No appointment needed! Alternatively, students have the option to schedule appointments for in-person or virtual consultations.
- Attend a seminar. We offer seminars that address common concerns among multilingual and multicultural students. Check out the Workshops section to find seminars on topics such as cultural adjustment, cross-cultural communication, and writing support tailored specifically for multilingual scholars, among many others.
- Join a Cross-Cultural Conversation group! Meet informally with a small group of U.S. and international students to discuss intercultural communication, traditions here and abroad, pop culture, university life, or any other topic meant to expand your intercultural learning and build cross-cultural friendships. The small groups are led by our EL&IL consultants. Contact leslie.bohon@richmond.edu for more information.
